Is the STi really good at holding its value?

I am considering my next car and I really want it to be an STi - its poster has been up on my wall since I was a kid. However I'm a little taken aback by its prices.

A 2011 hatch with about 70k km on the odometer goes for about $30,000 CAD. A brand new STi today goes for $38,000 for the base model and $40,500 for the Sport package.

On the other hand, I found a 2012 BMW 328i xDrive going for the same $30,000 but this example has only 40k km on it. Today a 2015 328i xDrive starts at a bit over $46,000.

The difference between the Bimmer and the Subaru isn't huge but it is quite noticeable. Considering that the STi would have most likely gained most of its mileage in a parking lot and the Bimmer on a highway, I found the used prices surprisingly high. With the STi, I feel as though paying an extra 25% for a new, "untouched" car is almost worth it...

If you're going to get a new STi I would wait. This years model still has the EJ25 which is the motor that's been in these cars for like twenty years. I'm expecting Subaru to update the STi's within the next two years.

Also, I believe the STi will hold better resale value than an F30. And there will be a ton more F30's on the road than STi's.

Go for the STi no question. You'll have a ton more fun than in the F30, and you'll be part of the Subaru brotherhood.

The WRX on the other hand, that's a great value...

Don't listen to Aaron, STi or nothing. None of that peasant WRX stuff.

I'll post a better time than you on a stage rally.

I wasn't considering the BMW as a car for myself, I was just using it for comparison since its value dropped quite a bit more than the STi's.

I've had my G35x for 4.5 years now... it's a great car, but it's beginning to show its age now and also I really want to try something new. Hopefully that new engine hurries up.

Yes the STI are really expensive used. The difference in price between used and new is almost laughable. 6-8K more for a brand new one seems well worth it. I'm not sure I would feel comfortable paying 30+k on a WELL used with 70k or more on it.

If it was me I'd rather have a new base STI than a used loaded STI.

I'm dead set on a STi. If I get the 'rex I'll always feel like I came so close... but not close enough. I want to be like that rally d00d in the poster on my wall!

They hold there value really well, I've seen 100,000 km+ ones for the low $15k to $20k mark. The saab 9-2x is a good alternative, it's older but a much more refined then the STI of the time. Cheaper too.

I always loved the tail lights on these. Get the STI.

They've been shown testing it so hopefully some time soon. Not to say that the EJ is that bad or anything. And when the new motor shows the car probably won't have the classic subaru noise because it probably wont have unequal length headers.

The WRX and STi are both ridiculously good at holding their value. I bought a 2012 WRX (private party) last January for $20,000. In August, I traded it in to my dealership for $22,000 and 8000 more miles on the odometer.

On the one hand I'd want the newer best one I could afford, on the other hand they haven't had any motor updates in like 8000 years so buy an older one confidently knowing it should feel about the same :)

The KBB value on my 2007 WRX is somewhere in the neighborhood of $12,500, with 150,000 miles. I know mine would be less because of the mods, but...only 50% depreciation on an 8 year old car (high mileage no less) is kind of nuts.
